Saturday 6.21 Crown City Rockers + more…
20 06 2008*note*
Check the ill sounds & good vibes from the Crown City Fam…live hip hop does not get much better than this…
SATURDAY, JUNE 21ST

What happens when you combine trained musicians from the world-renowned Berklee School of Music in Boston, with an articulate emcee and breathtaking beat-wizard both born and raised in sunny, southern California?
Crown City Rockers, that’s what – a genre-blending hip-hop collective whose music is original, powerful and provocative all in the same breath and follows in the storied footsteps of such pioneers as The Roots, De La Soul and Tribe Called Quest.
With an organic blend of lush, funk-drenched grooves, riveting classic soul samples, sharp live instrumentation and of course old-school inflected rhymes, Crown City Rockers is a welcome breath of fresh air in today’s commercially cluttered hip-hop cosmos.
Comprised of stellar emcee Raashan Ahmad, producer Woodstock, keyboardist Kat Ouano, bassist/producer Headnodic, and drummer Max MacVeety, Crown City Rockers formed in Beantown’s Roxbury section during the late nineties.
The Crown City Rockers’ epic full-length LP, Earthtones is an astonishing achievement, seamlessly fusing all of the group’s sonic facets together. Indeed, the album overflows with Raashan’s battle raps, poetic musings and emotionally fraught tracks about life and love. The lyrics are, in turn, melded with Kat’s keyboards, Max’s drums and Headnodic and Woodstock’s beats – which run the creative gamut frum funk and soul, to jazz, to straight classic hip-hop.

This son of a jazz musician is dedicated to bridge the gap between hip hop and jazz. His musical influences range from Allen Jackson(dad) and John Coltrane to Pete Rock. Al’s DJ career was launched in 1989 fueled by his passion for collecting records and the desire to start an underground dance club. Simply stated, he began deejaying because he got tired of waiting in long lines and spending lots of money for clubs that were not worth the price of admission. In the year 2000, he was nominated for a LA Weekly Music Award as the “Best Selector DJ” and he was nominated for a NAACP Theater award in the “Best Musical Score”category for the play “2G’S.” He won the 2002 NAACP Theater Award for “Best Musical Score” in the play “Weights.” Currently, he has his own music production company called “Sincerebeats.” Through his company Sincerebeats, Al has released 2 DJ-mix CDs entitled L’automne and 2nd Quarter with more releases to follow.

|| MR CHOC ||

Choc, originally from Bakersfield, worked for a radio station there from 1993 to ‘95 and had a mix show called the Saturday Night Café with DJ C-Minus. Together they were known as “The Ruffnex.” They brought their own flava to Power 106 and took over the overnight show eventually finding their own places within the station.
He became a part of the Beat Junkies in ‘96. Choc says, “…ever since then, it’s been important to take my skill to the next level, cause everybody in the Beat Junkies had won awards, including two world titles from the ITF (International Turntable Federation). That forced me to step up and take it to a level that hasn’t been seen yet”. And Mr. Choc’s style is unique. It’s a style that he didn’t bite from anyone. Without a doubt, he is one of the top 4 radio mixers in the game.
Choc would eventually like to get into programming Power 106 and put our more mix tapes. Recently signed to Rawkus Records, Choc is getting ready to put out an album, “Sound Bombing Three”. Choc will continue to his journey into manipulating music on the turntables as long as he is still having fun. He’s already passed along his mixing to the next generation. “Even though I’ve tried to talk him out of it, my 10 year old son is mixing now.

There are three things you need to know about DJ Sloe Poke: 1. He doesn’t mess around with any of the artsy stuff. 2. You won’t hear him tactlessly scratching and 3. He goes to a club to rock it.
What makes Sloe Poke one of L.A. ’s best DJ’s is that he can spin several styles of music with ease. Sloe Poke attributes his skills to the years of spinning for people with diverse tastes, ages and cultures. Most DJ’s can spin two or three different genres of music but get lost when it comes to Latin music. This is where Sloe Poke excels. He’s the kind of DJ that can entice the older generation to go out on the dance floor and put a younger crowd to shame. He can mix a Salsa classic like Joe Arroyo’s “Rebelion” with Celso Pina’s Sonidero hit, “Cumbia Sobre El Rio,” then follow those songs with Thalia’s poppy, “Piel Morena” and Frankie Cutlass’ club fave, “ Puerto Rico,” making it all flow together somehow.

Friday 6.20 Grand Performances
20 06 2008FRIDAY, JUNE 20TH
Seun Kuti & Egypt 80

Seun Kuti & Egypt 80
June 20 2008, 8:00 PM
The youngest son of Nigerian world music icon Fela Kuti makes his Los Angeles debut. Since his father’s death when he was 15, lead vocalist/saxophonist Seun Kuti has led the legendary Egypt 80, the band his father had forged into one of Africa’s most exciting ensembles. Seun continues to propel the sounds and rhythms of Afrobeat – a pungent blend of funk and jazz with a Nigerian sensibility, reminiscent of James Brown but grittier – with socially conscious lyrics. Egypt 80 is as explosive as it was under Fela, combining horns, keyboards, percussion, guitars and vocals in a an overpowering blend that is always insistent.
Grand Performances (GP) is Southern California’s largest presenter of free performing arts programs and a landmark nonprofit arts institution established with a primary focus on bringing together the diverse peoples of Los Angeles, in unique settings, for concerts celebrating the cultural contributions of our community’s peoples.
Grand Performances summer series takes place on two stages at California Plaza the Watercourt stage and the Marina Pavilion.

This unique outdoor venue is the only one of its kind in Southern California. First-time evening attendees are often mesmerized by this extraordinary location – cradled between two high-rise towers, with water features (including the Watercourt) and the night time sky as a beautiful, natural canopy.
